Growing the Vision

Focus Areas: Policy & Program Development; Education

Problem Statement: Drowning is the leading cause of accidental deaths in all children under the age of four and this risk increases in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (National Autism Association, 2012; Stop Drowning Now, 2018).

Faculty Mentor: Marnie Renda

Site Mentor: Leslie Dulle

My main interest is the pediatric population and my passion is water safety and drowning prevention. I have explored potential possibilities for sites of interest and capstone mentors that also share similar passions. I plan to conduct my capstone research at Xavier University to promote water safety and learn about parent perspectives on the benefits and barriers of adaptive swimming lessons. I also plan to develop a business plan for the continuation of swimming lessons at Xavier University. I am excited for this opportunity to use the aquatic facility within the Health United Building at Xavier as both my faculty and site mentors will be on-site and provide years of experience related to program development. I look forward to taking steps to making a difference in the water safety awareness of families int he community and accessibility for adaptive swimming lessons using the skills I have learned as an occupational therapy student in addition to my years of aquatic experience.
